The Buffalo Gazette Has Ceased Publication.
Editorial Statement (1998)
We began writing restaurant reviews because we were angered by the geographic exclusion of inner-city restaurants from local restaurant guides published and distributed by other local newspapers and tourist & visitor agencies and organizations. Because of this senseless policy, some of the region's best restaurants were excluded from area guides while mediocre suburban eateries and corporate cookie cutter chain restaurants were included. We teamed up with the Gazette to review Buffalo's hidden gems, our often overlooked locally owned and operated neighborhood eateries. Most of the restaurants we review provide first class ethnic cuisine at down home Buffalo prices. All of the restaurants we review provide unbeatable authentic neighborhood ambiance. Together, you have good food and friendly interesting hosts -- the foundation for a memorable eating experience.
The results so far have been great. The Gazette offers more than double and triple the readership of the papers that redline inner-city restaurants. Readers, it turns out, want to try new types of food and visit new neighborhoods. Traffic in some restaurants has increased three-fold after a Gazette review, helping to build our community economic base while building community through great eating experiences. Please vote with your money and support local businesses.
It is our policy not to publish bad reviews. If we don't like the food, we don't waste space in the newspaper writing about it. We move on to the next restaurant and find food worth writing about. We're not in business to tell you where not to eat -- we're here to share our discoveries with you! We don't use a silly star system to rate food -- we tell you about the food. Our reviews are qualitative, not quantitative -- you can't assign a number rating to food and you can't compare apples to oranges.
We often review new restaurants. Unfortunately this is a difficult business and roughly 3/4 of the restaurants that open will fail within two years, hence many restaurants listed here have closed despite excellent food and often despite a strong customer base. We retained the reviews as encouragement for these entrepreneurs if they decide to give it another go.
Enjoy!
